UPF and UPF UK History
The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) is a global alliance of religious, academic, political and civic leaders, and organisations joined together to promote peace in which all people live together in harmony, cooperation and co-prosperity.


Vision
UPF is guided by a vision of humanity as one global family under God, called to live in accordance with core, universal principles. All people are believed to have equal value and are loved by God whether or not they believe in God themselves.

Our Team
Mr Virendra Sharma is the Labour MP for Ealing, Southall, and has been an MP continuously since 19 July 2007. In 2008 he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to immigration minister Phil Woolas, but he resigned three months later in protest at the Labour government's proposal to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport, which provides employment for many of his constituents. He has made official overseas visits as an MP to Cyprus, Kenya, various regions of India, Mauritius and South Korea. He came to Hanwell from India in 1968 and became a bus conductor, later working as a day services manager for people with learning disabilities in Hillingdon. He was a local councillor in the London Borough of Ealing from 1982–2010 and was Mayor for part of his time as councillor. He was asked by former UPF - UK Patron Lord King to takeover as UPF UK Patron and has hosted many UPF events in the House of Commons.
Having started and run her own women in business network for more than 22 years, her skills as a business & personal mentor, placed her as an expert in the business and D&I arena where she has worked for over 35 years. Focusing on women entrepreneurs, women in the corporate workplace especially women on boards, or the lack thereof, and even more so the Black Women's Paygap, and was recognised by the Queen with a CBE for that work. Her book 7 Traits of ‘High Successful Women On Board’, promoting the path to and greater gender and race diversity in company boardrooms, led her to deliver over 150 workshops and speeches on this subjects at LinkedIn, Facebook Google, EY, Baker & McKenzie,Deloitte, and many US , firms, and even Oman and Maldives this consolidates her as a corporate and international speaker on, leadership, entrepreneurship and D&I. Honoured by Queen Elizabeth II, and received 2 doctorates for her work in the Entrepreneurship, Global Diversity and Equality arena, she was recently nominated for and accepted into the prestigious St George’s House, Leadership organisation based at Windsor Castle, Windsor. June 2019 she was invested with an Honorary Fellowship by Kings College University London. She founded the WinTrade Week (Women In Trade) convention and Awards themed “Womenomics” hosting and celebrating over 600 women through a week of global business connections, networking, contracting and business development. I am a television broadcaster and journalist with 58 years in news reporting. These days I specialise on commentating on the Royal Family, Politics and community affairs. I am also a political commentator for Sky 585, on a show called Talking Politics which has a billion plus audience across the world. As a Royal commentator I advise broadcasters across the world on the Royal Family activities.
Founder of the Duchess Prestige cosmetic line and Galaxy Stars Ltd. She has also been involved with CCJ Charity alongside the Queen since 2006. Nivin holds the title of Ambassador of Peace for UPF-UN 🇫🇲🕊️ and serves as the Global Ambassador for the Commonwealth within the CEC.
She has been an active member of the Conservative Party since 2004 and serves as a Patron for "Two Cities" and the St. James Constituency. Nivin has also been involved with CCJ Charity alongside the Queen since 2006. She is also the President of CFO-NHS in Central London and is affiliated with SSAMAC CHARITY, Sheikh Saeed bin Ahmed Al-Maktoum Ltd, and CNWL.
Dr. Saima Niaz is a Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult - North East London NHS Foundation Trust. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists. She has extensive experience in General Adult Psychiatry, Liaison Psychiatry, Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities and Forensic Psychiatry, Perinatal Psychiatry. She is a Member of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) as well as an Executive Member - London Region, British Pakistani Psychiatrists Association. She has made contributions to both Healthcare and Community as a dedicated healthcare professional, a champion in healthcare advocacy and a philanthropist by generously supporting various causes in the UK and abroad. She also works to strengthen the relationship between healthcare professionals and the UK government as Deputy Chair of Conservative Friends of NHS. Margaret Ali introduced a monthly project in January 2024 to create a safe space for women to both speak freely and to be empowered. Dr Saima Niaz is one of the main figures involved in developing and guiding this project.

PhD, UPF – UK Trustee, and South London UPF Branch Chair. Since returning to the UK from the Far East at the turn of the millennium, Dr Lance Gardiner has worked as chair of regional branches of UPF first in East London and then South London, while also following a professional career in financial services technology in the City of London.
Leaning on his academic foundation with a PhD in Astronomy and his Oriental-English international heritage with formative years living in Africa, he has initiated local conferences on many topics including environmental sustainability, the state of the family and commemorations of Africa Day and the International Day of Peace. He continues to support the humanitarian activities of prominent Ambassadors for Peace connected with the UPF South London branch.
Keith Best is the Chair of UPF-UK Board of Trustees. Cert in Public Management Services, he is a former Member of Parliament (Anglesey/Ynys Môn) and Parliamentary Private Secretary to Secretary of State for Wales. He is also a former Executive Chair, World Federalist Movement (WFM/IGP). He is currently the Chair & CEO Wyndham Place Charlemagne Trust, Chair Charity 2020, Secretary Parliamentary Outreach Trust, European Movement and Patron of The European-Atlantic Movement (TEAM). He has media appearances on migration and other matters and is a Freeman City of London.
Author several books and articles (latest, chapter in Religious Soft Diplomacy & the United Nations [2021]); keynote speeches both in the UK and abroad; visiting lecturer various universities. Formerly CEO of national charities SurvivorsUK, Freedom from Torture, IAS (Immigration Advisory Service), Prisoners Abroad; Vice Chair of the European Council on Refugees and Exiles; served on Foreign Secretary’s Advisory Panel on Torture Prevention; practising barrister and named in the Society Guardian as one of the 100 most influential people in public services in the UK; Major in airborne and commando forces.
Mrs Tina Coombs has been working in the community as a Care Worker with the Croydon A&E Liaison Team for the past 10 years, as well as working with a Health & Nutrition Company. Prior to this, Tina was President of the Women’s Federation for World Peace (Europe and U.K.) when she co-founded the Dignity Project, which works to empower women, promote the value and dignity of women and highlight the importance of this in creating a culture of peace. Tina is passionate about working with organisations that act for positive social change, e.g. the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, the United Nations Association for Sutton and Croydon and the Croydon Community Against Human Trafficking (CCAT). Tina was born and raised in Austria, where she worked as Dietician. She has also lived in the USA, and for the last 35 years in the UK with her husband David, their four daughters and two grandchildren.
Mark Brann trained and practised for many years as a lawyer, was Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa of United Press International and C.E.O. Europe of the North Korea Medical Aid project of the International Relief and Friendship Foundation. He is currently the Vice President of UPF Europe and Middle East based in the United Kingdom and the Director of the International Summit Council for Peace Europe and Middle East.
From 1990 to 1997, Mr. Fraser Harris served the International Religious Foundation (IRF) as the director of its European office in Rome. He was responsible for the promotion of IRF’s interfaith programs in Europe, which included both conferences and the international projects of the Religious Youth Service. From 1997 to 2012 he and his family lived in Damascus (Syria), where he taught English and travelled frequently to support UPF programs in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and other parts of the region. He continues to support such programs from his home just outside Biggar in the Scottish Borders.
Actar Dinata has been a journalist and a TV Radio Presenter, both aboard and in the UK, from a very young age. She is multi - awardee, a global communicator and educator. Over the last eight years she has received eight awards, including two international awards, from Evanston in USA and the International Woman Forum. At the age 19 she was pictured on the cover of Woman magazine when she was appointed as the leader of Diversity and Equality for women. In 2018 she was the front cover girl on Sovereign Magazine. Actar Dinata’s first job, at age 19, was as a TV/Radio presenter. During this time, she was approached by many charities and local organisations for sponsorship. She provided clothing, food and medicines for people who were living in nearby villages and from the poor areas of the town. She moved country several decades ago to live in the UK but the tradition of helping charities continues. Actar Dinata has promoted community involvement, helping disadvantaged children, mental health charities and youth empowerment campaigns and competitions through her charitable activity. She has been a proud Rotarian for over 25 years. She has won an Audentior Award which is a very special recognition of her extensive community service from the Mayor of her hometown. She has also supported a number of other charities, including the Universal Peace Federation UK, who appointed her as an Ambassador for Peace. She has been actively promoting fundraising activities for good causes within UPF UK. Her philosophy is to give more than you take. She believes passionately that we can make a difference in helping the most vulnerable and desperate people with the UPF philosophy of living for the sake of others.
Dr. Abdul Basit Syed, is a British Indian Global Peace Activist, Writer and Entrepreneur living in Croydon, U.K. He holds senior positions in various global organisations. He is accredited with Peace, Education, Trade harmony initiatives globally. His services to humanity has its history of nearly two decades. He was born in Tamil Nadu, India and migrated in his teens to U.K. He was inspired by his grandfather PKS Kattuwa Mohaiyadeen an Indian Freedom Fighter, was well known for his social activities and community services. He began actively involving himself in community activities, when he witnessed the unfortunate incident involving a well-loved British soldier Lee Rigby. He initiated solutions for similar terrorism activities with the sole purpose of bringing peace and harmony among various sectors of the community promoting the prevention of similar activities in the future through his founded NGO “World Humanitarian Drive (WHD)" initiatives, events, and programs./span>

Robin Marsh is the Secretary General of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) in the UK. He attended the interfaith oriented Unification Theological Seminar from 1985-87 and later worked for UPF and its preceding organisations in South Korea and the United States before being appointed SG of UPF-UK.
UPF has been working to promote interfaith, intercultural and international understanding as well as empowering young adults and women. During 2005 – 7, he was part of a team coordinating the Middle East Peace Initiative activities for European UPF bringing European politicians, religious leaders, media, NGO leaders and others to meet Israeli and Palestinian counterparts in the search for peace in that troubled region.
Margaret Keverian Ali began her academic journey in microbiology, successfully earning her degree in this field. However, her career took an unexpected turn when she stepped in to assist a friend with organizing international conferences and exhibitions, primarily based in London. This experience opened doors for her to join a publishing group located in Holborn. Her role there involved extensive travel across Africa, where she worked diligently to enhance the accessibility of journals and publications, including the New African Magazine, within the continent. Her efforts were recognized with her appointment as the Director for Africa, a role in which she significantly contributed to the growth of the magazine and its associated journals. Following this, Margaret took on a pivotal position as the Director for the UK branch of the Universal Peace Federation, a role she continues to hold, leveraging her diverse skills and experiences.
Since joining the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) in 2005, she has been deeply involved in addressing poverty, human suffering, and racial conflict. Her commitment to creating a peaceful and harmonious world led her to UPF, an organization dedicated to peacebuilding and fostering unity across societal sectors. She is a strong advocate for UPF's principles of mutual respect, collaboration, and good governance, and believes in its potential to drive significant change in the world.

Mr Konstantinos Kapelas had a successful career in hospitality for 15 years and worked for companies such as Claridge’s, Rolls Royce and Warner Brothers. After a serious health burnout, he left the industry and decided to follow his passion in holistic health, which led him to acquire over 30 qualifications. For over 10 years Kostas together with his wife Lana have been running Total Health Now Clinic© in central London and online that specialises in strong immunity, gut health, detox , weight and inch loss. His clinic has helped over 2000 clients to improve their health since 2009. Kostas has spoken at events like “Mind-Body- Soul”, “VegFest“ and he was published on magazines like “Time & Leisure”, “Families”, “The Green Parent” as well as he has also co- authored two books.
Dr Sangita Shrestha (also known as Sangita Swechcha) is an accomplished Communication Professional, Fiction Writer, and Art and Literary Campaigner based in England. As a published author, her works include a novel, a collection of short stories, and several edited volumes, with her writings featured in numerous international journals and platforms. Sangita has been actively involved in coordinating art exhibitions and hosting literary events across various countries, demonstrating her dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding through the arts. In 2019, she served as the Guest Editor for the ‘Nepali Literature Month’ at the Global Literature in Libraries Initiative (GLLI), a U.S. based organisation committed to amplifying world literature. In recognition of her over 15 years of contributions to the international development sector, Sangita was honoured with the Ambassador for Peace award by the Universal Peace Federation in December 2023. She is also the recipient of the ANESAS Nawaratna Award from the International Nepali Literary Society for her outstanding work in promoting Nepali literature globally. As the Chair of the International Association of Art and Culture for Peace, Sangita continues to champion the transformative power of art and literature in building a more harmonious and peaceful world.

Dr. Afzal Ashraf is a British academic and former senior military officer specializing in international relations, security, and counterterrorism. He is a University Teacher at Loughborough University and an Associate Member at the University of Nottingham’s Centre for the Study of Subversion, Unconventional Interventions, and Terrorism. With over 30 years in the UK Armed Forces, he held roles in Iraq, Afghanistan, Cold War deterrence, and famine relief in Africa. He also worked in the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, contributing to diplomacy and policy development. Dr. Ashraf has taught international relations and security at various universities, including as an Assistant Professor at Nottingham. His research focuses on terrorism, radicalization, cyber security, and religion-related conflict. He is currently writing *Blasphemism*, a monograph on blasphemy as a driver of political extremism. He is also a regular media commentator on global security issues.
Hera Kruja is a TV presenter, journalist, and producer at ALB UK TV and FAB UK TV, known for creating engaging content across fashion, lifestyle, and culture. She has covered major events like Miss England and London Fashion Week, interviewed top designers and celebrities, and co-produces the lifestyle show *Elegance Jete*. Hera also explores hidden gems of the city in her series *The London Magic*. She holds a master’s degree in Multimedia Journalism from the University of Westminster and has reported on a wide range of topics as a multimedia journalist and freelancer. With a strong background in video production and storytelling, Hera combines creativity and leadership to craft content that informs and inspires.
Mr Konstantinos Kapelas had a successful career in hospitality for 15 years and worked for companies such as Claridge’s, Rolls Royce and Warner Brothers. After a serious health burnout, he left the industry and decided to follow his passion in holistic health, which led him to acquire over 30 qualifications. For over 10 years Kostas together with his wife Lana have been running Total Health Now Clinic© in central London and online that specialises in strong immunity, gut health, detox , weight and inch loss. His clinic has helped over 2000 clients to improve their health since 2009. Kostas has spoken at events like “Mind-Body- Soul”, “VegFest“ and he was published on magazines like “Time & Leisure”, “Families”, “The Green Parent” as well as he has also co- authored two books.
Dr Sangita Shrestha (also known as Sangita Swechcha) is an accomplished Communication Professional, Fiction Writer, and Art and Literary Campaigner based in England. As a published author, her works include a novel, a collection of short stories, and several edited volumes, with her writings featured in numerous international journals and platforms. Sangita has been actively involved in coordinating art exhibitions and hosting literary events across various countries, demonstrating her dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding through the arts. In 2019, she served as the Guest Editor for the ‘Nepali Literature Month’ at the Global Literature in Libraries Initiative (GLLI), a U.S. based organisation committed to amplifying world literature. In recognition of her over 15 years of contributions to the international development sector, Sangita was honoured with the Ambassador for Peace award by the Universal Peace Federation in December 2023. She is also the recipient of the ANESAS Nawaratna Award from the International Nepali Literary Society for her outstanding work in promoting Nepali literature globally. As the Chair of the International Association of Art and Culture for Peace, Sangita continues to champion the transformative power of art and literature in building a more harmonious and peaceful world.
